May 12, Seventh Sunday of Easter
Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord
Daily Readings: Acts 1:1-11—18:1; Ephesians 1:17-23; Mark 16:15-20

Today's readings speak to fulfilling the scripture. In the first reading, Peter proposes a method for choosing Judas' replacement, who betrayed Jesus, based on his number and ministry share.

The choice is between Judas, also known as Barsabbas, Justus, and Matthias.  The Holy Spirit guided Matthias' selection as one of the eleven disciples to carry out Jesus' apostolic ministry.  The responsorial psalms proclaim that the Lord has set his throne in heaven.

The second reading speaks of God as love. Love for God inspires us to love others as he has loved us. If there is love, God remains in us because God is love.

In the Gospel, Jesus' love for his disciples is overwhelming. Before he left, he entrusted them to His Father. He prayed to the Father that the Father would always be with them. At the same time, Jesus was so confident in his disciples that they could continue his ministry. Just as the Father sent him into this world, Jesus is sending his disciples into it.

This is what we call commissioning, choosing someone to do a special piece of work. Since this is a special mission, it only shows that Jesus thoroughly trusted his disciples to do his mission in this world. Being trusted is a privilege. It simply signifies that God favors you to carry out His work, and choosing you is a blessing.

Call to Action for Catholic Living: The term "commission" refers to the act of sending someone out to fulfill a specific purpose. Just like Jesus, he commissioned his disciples to spread the word of God, evangelize people, convert them, and baptize them in His name. Likewise, those who serve the church fulfill their duties and responsibilities as God's servants.

Lord, help us to fulfill our duty as your servants. Amen!

Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.”  Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
